ESENSUAL VIEWING
Travelling to Europe for the first time, I was mesmerised by the sculptures of Italy and the great works of art in Paris. This experience deepened my fascination with the human form, particularly the subtleties of skin — its luminosity, texture and quiet sensuality. I wanted to create paintings that invited a sensory response rather than a search for meaning.
Exploring the sculptural qualities of both the male and female body, I focused on the relationships between shape, line, form and movement. Working with glazes, impasto and varied paint consistencies, I experimented with surfaces that echoed the softness and depth of skin. Through these intimate studies of the body, I also found a way to express and better understand my own inner feelings.
Presented at Happenings Gallery in Parnell, Auckland, in May 2003, Esensual Viewing extended beyond painting into a multi-sensory experience. Inspired by the concept of a Happening, the exhibition brought together dance, music, food and atmosphere, including a performance by Catherine Chappell and guests.
At its heart, the exhibition was an invitation to feel — to let colour, form and surface stir something instinctive and sensual, without the need for interpretation. It was simply about the pleasure of looking and experiencing art through the senses.
